Old Friends: The Klamer Family Collection of Inuit Art
(Sculpture: October 25 - November 23, 1996 Graphics: April 12 - May 17, 1997)
Harry and Marcia Klamer began collecting Inuit art in 1961. Over thirty years they acquired a rich and varied collection of works spanning several generations of great Inuit artists. In 1978, the Klamers gave part of their fine collection to the Art Gallery of Ontario. When assembling their gift, Harry Klamer reflected that, "we experienced at once the joy and excitement of seeing old friends - that thrill of discovery which is always there when we look at favourite objects."
In 1996, Feheley Fine Arts was delighted to present more 'old friends' from the collection of Marcia and the late Harry Klamer. More than one hundred sculptures and half as many graphics were offered in two exhibitions. The sculptures included small ivory and bone carvings created by anonymous sculptors as well as large works by the most famous contemporary Inuit artists such as John Tiktak, Barnabus Arnasungaaq, John Pangnark and Kaka Ashoona. From etchings of intimate scale to large stonecut prints, the graphics exhibition presented a group of prints in superb condition by artists such as Kenojuak Ashevak, Kananginak Pootoogook, Pitseolak Ashoona, Pudlo Pudlat, and Parr.
