Material Culture: The Art of Mayureak Ashoona
November 3 - 30, 2001

The first solo exhibition of work by Mayureak Ashoona of Cape Dorset, featuring a comprehensive selection of her sculpture, drawings, prints and oil stick paintings.

Since the death of her husband, artist Qaqaq Ashoona, in 1996, Mayureak has been able to devote greater time and energy to her art, and her unique style has strengthened through this greater sense of freedom and subsequent confidence. She continues to create works on paper, but her greatest expansion in creativity has been in dynamic works sculpted in stone. These are advanced not merely in subject matter and scale but also in her remarkable handling of the complex technical requirements of the medium. In the midst of this latest period of freedom and creativity she has also explored painting. Mayureak's oil stick compositions on paper and on board are wonderfully free in gesture have finally allowed her, for the first time in her career, unlimited use of colour.
