Kananginak Pootoogook has often been referred to as the 'Audubon of the Arctic'. His drawings of arctic birds are remarkable for their ornithological accuracy combined with the artist's inherent affection for the subject. His study of birds began at a young age when he was taught to hunt in the traditional Inuit manner. Intimate knowledge of animals was the key to survival, and he found himself drawn to the birds he watched closely through the seasons. "I quietly studied their movements and grew to love them. Later I began to observe the varieties of birds that arrived I studied the shapes, sizes, colours and sounds " (Artist Interview, 1981 Cape Dorset Print Catalogue) Kananginak Pootoogook was one of the first to work in the newly formed printmaking studio in Cape Dorset in 1958, and over the years became a master printer. Since the late 1950's, he has achieved international renown through exhibitions and publications of his sculptures, prints and drawings, and is represented in major public and private collections. He is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy.
