This exhibition catalogue profiles selections from the collection of Jack Butler and Sheila Butler. The drawings were collected over several years beginning in 1969 when the Butlers arrived in Baker Lake to work with the graphic artists in that settlement. Superb essays by Sheila Butler and Marie Bouchard chronicle both the early years of art making in Baker Lake and the positioning of the Inuit artist within the broader context of Canadian contemporary art. Many hours of interviews with Jack Butler yielded a wealth of information and insight about the artists and their individual drawings. Artist quotes, interpretive essays and black-and-white photographs illustrate the art and lives of nine exceptional Baker Lake artists: Harold Qarliksaq, Jessie Oonark, Janet Kigusiuq, Victoria Mamnguqsualuk, Simon Tookoome, Nancy Pukingrnak, Martha Ittuluka'naaq, Hannah Kigusiuq and Luke Anguhadluq.
