It wasn't until the middle of her life that Ruth Qaulluaryuk became an artist. In the 1950s, she and her family moved closer to the settlement of Baker Lake due to a food shortage out on the land. In order to help support her family, Qaulluaryuk adapted her expert hand to sewing, creating wallhangings and crafts, in addition to her drawings. Qaulluaryuk was born in the remote Back River area in Nunavut and spent the first few decades of her life living on the land. This lifestyle is reflected in her artwork through the depictions of wildlife and vegetation of the Arctic. Qaulluaryuk is the daughter of Baker Lake artist Luke Angudadluq and her husband was the late Josiah Nuilaalik, an accomplished sculptor. Qaulluaryuk has seven children and many grandchildren.
