VICTORIA MAMNGUQSUALUK (1930 - )

Victoria Mamnguqsualuk lived a traditional life on the land until it was no longer possible when food shortages forced her, her husband and family to move to Baker Lake in the early 1960s. It was in Baker Lake that art became a large part of her life. Her mother, Jessie Oonark, and Mamnguqsualuk's siblings, were also taking part in the government-funded arts and crafts program.

Mamnguqsualuk is a superb colourist with an ability to create a narrative with images. Her favourite subjects are the myths and legends of her people, which lend themselves perfectly to her narrative style.
