IRENE AVAALAAQIAQ (1941 - )

Irene Avaalaaqiaq is a prominent artist best known for her dynamic wallhangings but whose creativity extends to drawings, prints, and sculpture. Avaalaaqiaq's great skill for wallhangings stems back to her childhood out on the land where her grandmother taught her to sew clothing out of hides. It wasn't until she moved to Baker Lake in 1958 that she was able to pursue a career as an artist. Her imagery most often lingers in the spirit world with bold colours and distinctive shapes.

Due to her contribution to Inuit art and her continued involvement with the Baker Lake community, Avaalaaqiaq was awarded an honourary degree from the University of Guleph in 1999.

Most recently, Avaalaaqiaq's work was featured in the 2007 Baker Lake Print Portfolio. This release included eight prints by eight artists from the community.
