MARK ALIKASWA (1928- ) |

Mark Alikaswa, who has lived in Arviat, Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove, was born in 1928 near the Manitoba border. His career as an artist began in 1967 when he focused mainly on carving human figures out of the local grey Arviat stone and occasionally trying his hand at caribou antler. Alikaswa’s works are simple figures with basic extremities and
facial features. However, there is often a deep and fundamental spirituality
found in his pieces, articulated by smaller figures coming from the
base of the sculpture near the principal subjects. Characteristic of
Mark Alikaswa are his peaceful depictions of the mother and child theme,
which are often rather large in scale. These works frequently exemplify
the severity of life in the North as the women depicted are leaning,
as if into the cold wind.
